When I grow up I want to be a….
I’ve always been in awe of people who know exactly what they would like to do from a very young age.
The child who liked to draw and build model aircraft then became a pilot, the child who liked to help out with the cooking and became a chef or the child who liked to play doctors and nurses and went on to become either a doctor or a nurse.
The common denominator here is that they showed an early interest in a particular field and stuck with it!! A high proportion of us drift from job to job without actually finding what we would really like to do. More often than not, we look back at our lives wishing we had taken a different path.
Being of ‘’a certain age’’, I now firmly believe that you’re never too young to start thinking about a career. Of course a young person’s career choice is never set in stone… I remember an ex colleague’s son telling him he would like to be a either a butcher or a pilot. I don’t know if he settled on either.
Unfortunately, recent surveys have shown that most children want to be ‘famous’. We could blame the burgeoning celebrity culture we are all exposed to but with proper guidance we can steer our children towards reality.
Career guidance at school leaves a lot to be desired so, as parents, we should try to discover any latent interests in our children and begin to nurture them.

I am the father of four beautiful daughters whose age range span the primary, secondary and tertiary education sectors. I am also a Lecturer in the Foundation Learning department of a further education college. Foundation Learning departments cater for children who have not been successful at their GCSEs by helping them to make a 'fresh start' in education. Often, the reasons for a child's lack of any basic educational success could be traced back to a weak start at primary school. It is my contention that a strong foundation in education is key to a child's success. This hopefully would prevent them having to make a fresh start in education later on.
